Sony Alpha 7 IV (body) full-frame mirrorless camera features a 33 MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and a wide dynamic range for smooth capture of moving subjects. Video recording supports up to 4K UHD (3840×2160) in 10-bit 4:2:2 at up to 60p with full pixel readout and no pixel binning. Standard ISO range 100–51,200 can be expanded to ISO 50–204,800 for stills and ISO 100–102,400 for video, delivering low-noise performance. A 15-stop dynamic range helps render subtle scene details. The 4D FOCUS system uses 759 phase-detection points covering about 94% of the photo and video frame. Sony Alpha 7 IV stabilization and gyro sensors, combined with stabilization algorithms, provide up to 5.5 stops of shutter compensation.
The BIONZ XR processor focuses on real-time AF processing, image recognition, and image quality tuning to minimize lag and improve performance for video and stills. High processing speed supports confident burst shooting and responsive data transfer. Workloads for UI, networking, and file control are distributed to maintain fast responsiveness regardless of system load. Ten Creative Look presets and eight adjustable parameters allow quick mood setting for photos, video, and live streaming.
In addition to RAW and JPEG, HEIF (High Efficiency Image File) is available for stills. Smooth 10-bit gradations help render realistic skies and portraits with subtle tonal transitions. Both mechanical and electronic shutters support over 800 frames at up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking, enabled by a large buffer, BIONZ XR, and faster card writing. Improved real-time AF performance remains strong even if the subject looks away. Touch tracking lets you start real-time tracking for any subject with a single tap, with simultaneous eye detection autofocus.
Full-frame 7K oversampling for 4K video up to 30p delivers high resolution and detail. The camera can record internally in 10-bit 4:2:2 using Long GOP or All-Intra for flexible editing and post workflows. All-Intra encodes each frame individually at up to 600 Mb/s, capturing complex motion and improving editing efficiency. The XAVC format uses HEVC/H.265 encoding, offering roughly double compression efficiency compared to AVC/H.264 and reducing file sizes. S-Cinetone color, based on CineAlta VENICE technology, provides pleasing skin tones without additional editing. Creative Look presets enable in-camera visual effects during shooting. S-Log3 provides access to more than 15 stops of dynamic range for post-production. A focus map function helps visualize depth of field.
The Multi Interface (MI) shoe enables cable-free connection, direct digital audio transfer without quality loss, and power delivery. The camera supports streamlined live streaming setup: connect via USB to a computer or smartphone and select USB streaming. The side-opening 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD is bright enough for outdoor use, and a 3:2 aspect ratio makes efficient use of display area. Two media slots allow continued shooting even if a card fills up. Both slots support UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC/SDHC, and one slot also supports CFexpress Type A.
