Sony Alpha 7R II compact full-frame mirrorless camera features 42.4 MP resolution, hybrid autofocus, 5-axis image stabilization, and 4K video recording. The camera is equipped with a 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor with an effective resolution of 42.4 MP. The absence of an optical low-pass filter ensures sharp, detailed images across the entire frame. The BIONZ X image processor includes detail reproduction technology, diffraction reduction, and an area-specific noise reduction algorithm, enabling processing of the large data volume from the 42.4 MP sensor.
The high-performance sensor expands fast hybrid AF capabilities: 399 focal-plane phase-detection points cover 45% of the image area, and the sensor includes 25 contrast-detection points. If the selected AF point is not precisely on the subject, the system automatically uses nearby AF points around the selected area to achieve accurate focus and optimal sharpness. The 5-axis stabilization system is designed to support high-resolution shooting and corrects five types of camera shake, equivalent to shooting at approximately 4.5 stops slower shutter speed.
With full pixel readout and no pixel binning for Super 35mm 4K video, Sony Alpha 7R II achieves high resolution and clarity. XAVC S supports 4K recording at up to 100 Mb/s. The camera includes Sony’s S-Log2 gamma, used in professional video cameras, expanding dynamic range to 1300% to improve tonal transitions and reduce over- and under-exposed areas. In S-Log2, sensitivity can be set from ISO 800 and above. 4K recording supports uncompressed HDMI output to a monitor or external recorder.
Image settings can be saved as up to 7 profiles. The XGA OLED Tru-Finder viewfinder offers 0.78× magnification and ZEISS T* coating to reduce flare. Silent shooting uses an electronic shutter with no vibration, enabling sharper images without shutter shock and silent operation for situations where shutter noise is undesirable (e.g., wildlife or concerts). Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC allow transferring photos and MP4 videos to a smartphone or tablet.
Additional functions include Auto HDR (Rich Color mode), DRO dynamic range optimizer, and Multi Frame NR noise reduction. Auto HDR captures three frames at different exposures to extend dynamic range and improve detail in shadows and highlights while capturing smooth tonal transitions. DRO adjusts image parameters to produce smoother tonal transitions and more detail in bright and dark areas, including during continuous shooting and moving subjects. Multi Frame NR combines four images to reduce noise and improve sensitivity.
