Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM macro lens provides 1:1 magnification and also functions as a medium telephoto, expanding its use to portraits, still life, and product/catalog shooting. It delivers smooth bokeh, strong sharpness, and very close focusing, around 30 cm to the front element, enabling subjects such as a large coin to fill the frame. In some situations—especially low light or when shooting low-contrast subjects—AF may hunt; in such cases manual focus is recommended. The optical design uses 12 elements in 8 groups. Spherical aberrations during focusing are corrected across the full range. An 8-blade diaphragm provides good background blur even when stopping down by 1–2 stops. A built-in focus limiter sets macro magnification to 1/4. Low-friction ceramic ball bearings support moving elements for smooth movement that helps compensate camera shake in macro shooting.
