Canon EF 8–15mm f/4L Fisheye USM zoom lens can produce both circular and full-frame fisheye images. When used on full-frame DSLR cameras such as Canon 5D Mark II or Canon 1Ds Mark III, it allows switching between circular and full-frame fisheye looks while using zoom for unique compositions. The lens covers 180° vertically and horizontally. When used on smaller-sensor cameras such as Canon 7D and below, as well as Canon 1D Mark III or Canon 1D Mark IV, images take on a more traditional full-frame fisheye look; circular images are not possible on smaller sensors.
A zoom lock mechanism limits the focal length range to ensure full-frame images without unwanted edge vignetting. “C” and “H” marks on the zoom ring indicate wide-angle positions that allow vignetting-free shooting with the corresponding sensor sizes (APS-C and APS-H). The optical design includes 14 elements in 11 groups, including one aspherical and one ultra-low dispersion (UD) element to correct chromatic aberration and deliver high-contrast images with accurate color.
Stray reflections and flare can be an issue at such wide angles. To reduce them, all lens elements use Super Spectra coating. The inner surface of the front element also has Canon Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC), which reduces internal reflections and helps prevent flare before light reaches the sensor. A fluorine coating on the front and rear elements repels water, dust, and dirt, making cleaning easier and helping protect against contamination. The ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) provides fast, accurate focusing and supports full-time manual focus override.
