Canon TS-E 17 f/4.0 L tilt-shift lens provides tilt and shift of the optical axis relative to the film plane or camera sensor and is one of the highest-quality lenses with the widest focal length in its class. Using dedicated control mechanisms, the Canon TS-E 17 f/4.0 L can tilt up or down by 6.5° in either direction, shift left/right parallel to the optical axis by 12 mm, or rotate around its axis by 90° in either direction. These design features enable creative options that are difficult to achieve with standard lenses. For example, tilt allows precise control of focus and depth of field, keeping a chosen subject sharp while strongly blurring the background. Shift is useful for keeping walls parallel when photographing very tall buildings, for panoramas, and other scenarios. If tilt/shift is not needed, the lens can be locked in a neutral position using dedicated clamps.
The lens is well suited for landscapes and nature and is essential for interior, architectural, and urban photography. The 8-blade circular aperture produces a natural-looking blurred background. The optical design includes 18 elements in 12 groups. High-precision aspherical elements in the front group minimize wide-angle distortion, and low-dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberration. Combined with a carefully engineered design, the lens delivers accurate color, excellent resolution, and strong sharpness and contrast across the frame. SWC and Super Spectra multi-layer coatings reduce flare and reflections. A floating element system maintains high image quality at close focus distances. The lens focuses manual-only.
