This lens series has been produced by Nikon since 1994, indicating solid optical build quality. Before that it underwent only two changes: from October 1984 to February 1989 Nikon produced a manual-focus 20mm Ai-S lens, and from February 1989 to 1994 a 20mm version without the D marking and aperture ring. The previous version differed mainly by the ability to transmit distance information for correct flash operation.
