Minimal change in angle of view while focusing and quiet motorized operation make it suitable for both photo and video. The “G” designation indicates high image quality and strong optical performance.

A floating element system is used to suppress aberrations at close distances, maintaining exceptional sharpness across the frame from infinity to minimum focusing distance while helping keep the lens compact. Smooth background blur is a key G-series characteristic; individual calibration helps compensate spherical aberration so contours remain clean without the “nisen” effect. A 9-blade circular diaphragm further improves bokeh rendering.

Two floating AF groups are positioned by DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) for precise, quiet autofocus suitable for full-frame macro work. Internal focusing means only internal elements move, so lens length does not change. OSS optical stabilization helps achieve sharp macro shots handheld.

A focus hold button is placed on the barrel; when pressed it locks focus until released and can be used while shooting continuous AF. A focus range limiter allows restricting the focus range to increase AF speed. Available ranges:
– ∞–0.5 m for distant subjects
– 0.5–0.28 m for close subjects
– FULL for the entire range
