The optical design includes aspherical elements to reduce distortion and low-dispersion glass to control chromatic aberrations. Two XA aspherical elements (0.01 micron surface precision) suppress onion-ring bokeh artifacts. Distortion typical of wide-angle zooms is tightly controlled along with astigmatism and field curvature. Nano AR coating reduces flare and ghosting in backlight and complex lighting, providing more flexibility in composition at wide focal lengths.
A floating focus system with two independently moving lens groups minimizes aberrations and maintains sharpness and high resolution across the zoom range. Two DDSSM drives with Sony piezo actuators directly move the floating groups for highly accurate, near-silent focusing, making the lens suitable for photo and video. Focus hold button, manual focus ring, AF/MF switch, and other controls provide additional operation; the focus hold button can be assigned other functions via the camera menu.
