Canon 7D Mark II DSLR with a 20.2 MP sensor is designed for high-speed shooting. Two DIGIC 6 image processors manage autofocus, exposure metering, and sensor data processing for photo and video. The camera supports continuous shooting up to 10 fps in JPEG, RAW, or both simultaneously. Up to 31 RAW frames can be captured in a burst (with UDMA 7 CF cards), and JPEG burst is effectively unlimited until the card fills. Frame rate can be set based on subject speed. HDR mode helps retain detail in high-contrast scenes by capturing three exposures and combining them for natural-looking results.
For stable, accurate metering, the camera uses a 150,000-pixel APS-C metering sensor that divides the scene into 252 zones. Each zone is analyzed to set correct exposure; settings can be applied automatically or suggested. In low light, infrared light is measured together with the visible spectrum for improved accuracy. The camera can also detect flickering light (e.g., fluorescent lamps) and time shots to coincide with peak brightness to reduce flicker.
The 7D Mark II includes 65 AF points for tracking fast-moving subjects. All points support precise focusing on horizontal and vertical lines. Autofocus works down to -3 EV. The iTR tracking and recognition AF system uses color and face information to detect and track subjects across the frame. AF response speed can be tuned so that objects briefly crossing in front of the subject do not disrupt focus.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides smooth, continuous AF in video and Live View. Each pixel uses two photodiodes for AF and image capture. Tracking AF speed and sensitivity can be adjusted for smoother focus transitions.
Video features include Full HD (1080p) recording at up to 50/60 fps. HDMI output supports Full HD delivery to external recorders for professional editing workflows. Microphone and headphone jacks support high-quality audio recording and monitoring, and silent controls allow adjustments without audible noise. A built-in interval timer supports time-lapse and other long-duration capture. Bulb mode supports very long exposures.
The viewfinder provides near-100% coverage with 1.0× magnification. A transparent LCD overlay shows focus/shooting info and a dual-axis electronic level. Dual memory card slots support automatic backup and expanded storage. A Wi-Fi adapter W-E1 (available on request) enables wireless transfer and remote control; it installs in an SD slot and supports Live View on a mobile device or computer. Automatic transfer of JPEG and RAW photos after capture is supported, as well as MP4 video transfer. The W-E1 adapter has limited range (up to 10 m) and relatively low transfer speed. Built-in GPS can tag images and video with latitude, longitude, altitude, compass direction, and UTC time.
