Sekonic L-558 is designed to meet the requirements of both film and digital workflows. It can measure extremely low light levels. Its sensor can measure flash starting from f/2.0 and ambient light starting from 1EV. The Sekonic L-558 also features a built-in 1-degree spot meter. Spot readings are displayed both in the viewfinder digital display and on the front-panel LCD.
Measured values can be displayed in three ways: combined readings (ambient and flash); the percentage contribution of flash in the total exposure (useful for balancing flash and available light); and measured flash, ambient, and mixed lighting values (on an analog scale).
In low-light conditions, the LCD backlight turns on automatically. Ambient metering modes: aperture priority, shutter priority, and automatic mode. Flash metering modes: wireless (cumulative or single), corded (cumulative or single), and radio triggering via an optional radio control module (cumulative or single). The convex milky-white dome is intended for reflected light measurement (54° acceptance angle). For incident light measurement, the dome retracts into a dedicated recess in the body.
The meter can store up to nine shutter speed–aperture pairs in memory, allowing contrast evaluation and average exposure calculation. A moisture- and dust-resistant body design allows use not only in the studio but also in adverse weather. The device includes out-of-range sensitivity indication.
